Board Member Spotlight: Ashley Reid Brown

Ashley Reid Brown, Board Member

1. What drew you to get involved with Girls on the Run of the Greater Chesapeake now?

Last year, my daughter, Lydia, said she wanted to do a 5K. What started as a simple goal quickly evolved into something much bigger—participating as community members in the GOTRGC 5K, helping to bring the program to her school, stepping into a coaching role, and now becoming a member of this amazing board. Reflecting on my own childhood, the tween years are when I began to feel more self-conscious and my light began to dim a bit. I know GOTR would have made a huge difference for me. Joining the board feels like a natural next step as a way to support a program that has already given so much to my family and community.

2. Why do you think it's so important for girls today to have access to this program?

Girls today are navigating enormous pressure—social, academic, and emotional—at increasingly young ages. Girls on the Run uses a combination of physical activity, emotional learning, positive mentorship, and practical tools to create a rare and powerful space. Coaching gave me a front-row seat to the incredible impact this program has as the girls on my team grew in confidence, joy, and resilience. The Girls on the Run curriculum helps girls understand that their voices matter, their bodies are strong, and they are capable of hard things. They're having fun while learning lessons that stay with them far beyond the program.

3. What are some of your hobbies or interests?

I love creating spaces where people feel welcome, supported, and energized. I enjoy throwing theme parties, planning vacations with family and friends, and baking. I’m also committed to challenging my mind and body every day through cross-training (e.g., running, spinning, weightlifting, Pilates, yoga, etc.), reading, and brain teasers. For me, it's all about making memories, fostering meaningful connections, and staying active and curious.
